The Biofuels Association of Australia today congratulated the Manildra Group of Companies on being the first in the world to achieve certification under the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB). The RSB is an independent third party certification scheme for biofuels sustainability standards, encompassing environmental, social and economic principles and was established in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"This is an exemplary outcome for Manildra and for the biofuels industry in Australia" Heather Brodie, CEO of the BAA said. "It is very exciting that an Australian company is the first in the world to achieve this benchmark and it will provide the impetus for other companies around the globe to do the same".
Ninety eight percent of the energy used in the transportation industry still derives from fossil fuels and biofuels can make immediate and significant contributions in terms of greenhouse gas reductions in Australia without impacting on food products.
"Manildra's certification under the scheme has occurred following numerous rigorous audit processes" Ms Brodie continued. "The commitment of the management and staff is to be congratulated as is their dedication to ongoing improvements".
"Biofuels are really about regional development and creating local jobs at a time when Australia is importing more than half of its liquid fuel needs. But the industry can't simply happen overnight and Manildra is clearly committed to ensuring that any growth in the industry is undertaken in the most sustainable manner possible".
